Church of Saint Antonio

SUBSIDIARY CHURCH
Church of Saint Antonio

Details

CNT Fossato 8
Closed

Currently, it is not possible to enter inside.

The façade of the small Church of Saint Anthony features a pediment and a rose window above the entrance portal. The church, built with a masonry structure, is currently in a very advanced state of material decay: the roof and part of the bell tower have collapsed, and significant cracks are visible in the masonry, indicating the precarious structural situation of the building. Through the windows, one can glimpse the decorations of the presbytery area, which are a very intense blue color.

The dimensions of the church are 5 meters by 10 meters.

HISTORICAL NOTES

  • 17th Century (Construction of the entire property)
    • The Church of Saint Anthony was built in the second half of the 17th century, a few years after the construction of the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Soccorso, also in Poggio S. Marcello. The Municipality, between 1664 and 1667, handled the new construction site: it first removed stones from the square of San Marcello to build the road already known as the “road of Sant’Antonio,” and offered the necessary wood to fire the bricks and complete the construction. This new church is particularly important because it stands on the road leading to Montecarotto.
  • 1768 (General documentation)
    • The first document in our possession from the Archive of Sant’Antonio is dated 1768 and is the register of Masses kept in the sacristy. The new parish of Saint Anthony was adequately self-sufficient: it maintained a chaplain who was chosen by lottery each year from among the various priests of the town.
  • 1817 (Reconstruction of the roofs and bell tower)
    • In 1817, the roof was rebuilt along with a new bell tower, since the old one, besides being damaged, was not capable of holding the weight of the bells.
  • 20th Century – 1955 (General documentation)
    • Between 1768 and 1955, we can rediscover the documents of this parish in the Parish Archive. The last document referring to this church and present in the parish archive is dated 1955 and is an authorization for a procession.
  • 1967 (State of decay of the entire property)
    • The inventory of 1967 reports news on the situation of the churches: “S. Antonio da Padova (Saint Anthony of Padua) needs radical and general intervention. It has one confessional and four pews, in addition to a statue of S. Antonio, currently in the Parish House.”
  • 2013 (Unsuitability/Unusability of the entire property)
    • As of today, the church is in a state of total decay; it is not possible to enter inside, and the vegetation present on the site is taking over the building itself.
